Researchers must prioritize understanding how their work could go wrong, policymakers need to establish flexible frameworks that constrain new risks without constraining responsible innovation, and companies building commercial AI systems must put principles before short-term profits.

With good faith and concerted global cooperation, the development of artificial intelligence does not need to be a zero-sum competition where some groups profit at the expense of others losing out. But it will require vigilance, compromise and leadership to ensure the technology uplifts lives everywhere instead of leaving some behind or causing unintended division and harm.
